In 2003, Benjie quit his job as a newspaper writer to start a music company. What seemed like a colossal mess for the next few years eventually arranged itself into Backthird Audio, a hub that provides area musicians with paying work and closer relationships.
Along the way Benjie discovered that he loves to teach, that marketing can be fun, and that creating a business is as rewarding and exhausting as creating a song is. He and his wife, Amy, live in Aurora, although it feels like he’s hardly ever home.
Fostering a New Musical Community
The next great musical artist is already in our community. He or she will either give up and walk away from music or find a community and grow. So what can we do to build a community of artists that nurtures the individual, enhances the group as a whole, and enriches the greater locale?
