What are TEDxNaperville Adventures?

Adventures are specially-designed, mentally-stimulating excursions to local, suburban Chicago hotspots the morning of the conference. One Adventure is included for free as part of your TEDxNaperville ticket and is selected during purchase. Adventures change annually and offer exciting journeys into local businesses, community organizations, and scientific institutions doing fascinating work.

Signing Up

You’ll select an Adventure to attend during your ticket purchase. Some Adventures sell out quickly, so buy early to get your first pick.

Time & Location

Meeting details will be emailed to you 1-2 weeks before the conference. Most Adventures run 9:00-11:00am before the conference.

Attending

You’re responsible for travel to and from your Adventure. All Adventures are within 35 minutes driving range of the conference.

Access

Only those signed up for a specific Adventure will have access to it. No walk-ins allowed. Wait lists not available for full Adventures.

Argonne National Laboratory

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the world’s first artificial nuclear chain reaction, during an experiment led by Enrico Fermi, Argonne National Laboratory’s first director. Today, nearly every commercial reactor in operation was developed from Argonne research. Come explore the history of nuclear energy and get a glimpse of Argonne’s role in the development of next-generation nuclear energy technologies.

  • Time: 8:45am – 10:45am and 9:15am – 11:15am (Not accepting time placement requests)
  • Location: Argonne Information Center, Northgate Road, Lemont, IL
  • Requirements: Closed-toe shoes, driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID, Ages 16+
  • Note: Exact areas of access for this adventure are subject to change if scientific testing is in progress.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

You’ll gain access to Wilson Hall’s 15th floor, Atrium, Remote Operation Center for CERN, Remote Operation Center for Muon and Neutrino experiments, the Pre-Accelerator, Linac, and Main Control Room areas. Attendees will also visit the Silicon Detector Facility, which specializes in assembly and testing of both silicon and superconducting detectors, with applications in high energy physics, medical imaging, and astrophysics.

Do you love science and learning how your body interacts with the food you eat? We’ll provide insights into why food contains flavors and how our senses interact with the food we eat every day.  Come join us for a tour of FONA. Find out how flavors are made and the processes that go into creating taste.

Tour Illinois’ first high school innovation center at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora. Learn new techniques to spawn creativity, play IMSA’s original speed entrepreneurship game, Ventures 2 Vultures, and create a new product from the contents of our “Mystery Box.”  This is a hands-on, minds-on adventure, not a sit and get, so come ready to participate!

Launch Digital Marketing Workspace & Lunch

Make-It-Here is a do-it-yourself project and creation facility that helps you learn and build anything you can dream up, from electronics and metal work to printing and assembling your own furniture. At Make-It- Here you can bring life to your own creations. This behind-the-scenes look at this 12,500 sq. ft. facility, led by founder Mike Hanes, will show you how and where to literally build your own ideas.

Naperville Public Library – 95th Street Library and Tech Buffet

Explore Naperville Public Library’s newly-renovated 95th Street library and updated tech buffet, featuring a green screen room, sound recording studio and tech buffet. Customers have access to a variety of specialty hardware and software for both personal and professional use. Increase business exposure by using software to design websites, business cards, logos, commercials or jingles. Turn ideas into 3-D images with the 3-D software and printer. Preserve memories by converting them to digital format. All are available at your local library!

A behind-the-scenes look at one of the rising stars in the craft brewing world, right here in Naperville. CEO and 2013 speaker John Barley will guide you through a tour of their facility and current expansion process, as well as the brewery’s origins, and beer-making process.
